With the rapid development of China's social economy, contemporary art has entered a certain fuzzy state. On the one hand, rushed by the prospering art market, academic guidance has become the product of market supply and demand. The external environment that the artists face is getting ever more practical, leading to the fact that the practice of art presupposes some kind of utilitarian form and the establishment of style becomes the result of the external game. On the other hand, in this society with free access to information, frequent cultural exchanges and diversified thinkings on various issues, the artist has to fight for the right to speak in the topical market with their complex works, imbued with all sorts of social problems targeting different audiences.
Just as the green ray, in light of its rarity, has been conceived as a perfect prophecy through people’s imagination, the contemporary art scene has become a place where successful art practice is believed to be the result of one certain method aided by occasional good chance, while its essential meaning has been obliterated by external obscurity
In this exhibition, the common characteristics of the works are based on the individual experience with no targeted audiences; they are merely projecting today’s social life. Whether the works are about a scene or a specific object, they are all derived from the five artists’ memory and life experience. In this way, aggressive criticism has been softened into individual narratives, and grand social themes scattered in the teetered balance between the individual life and its exterior environment, elevating the art practice instead of downgrading it.
A creation of man, art is imbedded with human nature. In fact, along with the linguistic transformation in the twentieth century, especially the rise of abstract art in recent years, the artist is more concerned about the conceptual flesh, while the form per se has been burdened with the stereotyped paradigm produced from a certain period of history. Against the backdrop of globalization, it is imperative that art not be coerced by the culture of the strong, nor should it be fettered by the local customs. Rather, art should explore deep into human nature, as is demonstrated in this exhibition, whose works are more sentimental story-telling than cut-and-dry generalization. As Helena, hero of Green Ray by Jules Vernes said when she missed the opportunity to see the flash: “Since I have found my happiness, let the chance of seeing the green ray be left to others...,” to express this kind of individual feeling is precisely the end of art as well as of this exhibition: that the green ray is nothing more than a collective illusion and should not serve as the guiding light; and the artists must stick to their own styles and continue to embrace new possibilities rather than go with the flow.
