Solidification of Poetry and the Solemnity of Fairy Tales
As an artist He Jie, an born in the 1970s,
inevitably experienced the impact of the changes brought by the time during his
growth. The common psychological characteristics of the generation of the 1970s
could be regarded as some kind of psychic reflex usually for objective matters
from that age. However, the imprint of the time which comes from He Jie is
neither painful memories nor critical attitude, but the fragmental, subjective
and romantic reflection on the era. This is also the result driven by the
spiritual appeal of idealism. All these reflections in the memory of the
generation would be the eternal architecture erecting in the mind of the
artists, fragrant and graceful as poetry, magnificent and tragic as well!
He Jie's work, directly related to his
artistic development, is full of strong visual implications of northern China.
His special visions are to grasp the strength of image and keen on feelings and
chirality. Based on requirements for shape, his painting actually shows a great
ability in both grand scenes and tiny details, while the other brilliant
expression of emotion and sentiment is the personalization of the element of
the color. He Jie always put instant imprint of
the era into artistic method of solidification in his drawing, which
means he prefers to choose the scenes and feelings which shines forever in the
memory of his generation since they all had similar experience during their
growth, rather than the objective issues in common visual context. Even though
there are still specific objects in He Jie’s work, he tries to create a new
spiritual world beyond the concept of material, avoiding the representation of
the issues themselves. In the noumenon view of art, what he attempts to do is
to build new values for painting by giving up the noumental value.
Zhang Kai’s work, just like himself,
displays the figure of quietness and elegance that seems to have come from a
wonderland. It is full of romantic aesthetic implication in the world he
created though there is a trace of sadness. However, what is reflected in his
painting is the serious attitude distinctively to the beauty, and it is root in
the sincere and pristine of Zhang Kai’s artistic values.
Zhang Kai doesn’t put emphasis on whether
the art would meet the ordinary meanings of the reality, what he concerns is
the visible stories and emotional attachments in his inner world. This allows
an artist a feeling of easiness in the self-space and, enables him to be
serious about to every experience. The visual elements in Zhang Kai’s work are
mostly based on classical painting, and then reframes the basic elements since
he conducts devout method to worship them. The substitution and transformation
are the harvest of the artist’s fantastic personal inner world. The fairy-tale
context comes true due to the intense combination with style and content.
Zhang Kai consistently keeps his fairy-tale
dream in the productions, regardless of the particular concept of metaphor or
manufacturing concept of era. His serious attitude is enough to enable his
fairy tale world to go on forever.
